Mechanism of RNAi and R gene-mediated resistance to viruses. Antiviral RNA silencing in plants and its suppression by virus-encoded RNA silencing suppressor (RSSs). RNA silencing is initiated by viral dsRNA or partially double strand hairpins RNAs, which are processed vsiRNAs by Dicers. Following entry into a host cell, viral effectors are expressed from the virus genome. Specific plant R genes interact (directly or indirectly) with these effectors to trigger virus resistance.
